Meet the Team

Inception and history

Founded in January 2023, Project AHEAD began as a bold initiative to build a liquid rocket engine—an ambitious pursuit fueled by the vision to make space launches accessible for Rwanda and Africa. Philemon Manzi Mucyo, our founder, has studied rocketry since 2016, driven by a passion to see Rwanda take part in the global space industry, and on a personal level to see himself in space studying dark matter and dark energy from outer space.

A pivotal conversation with Anneliese Wyler during the 2022 FIRST LEGO League showcase at Hanga Pitchfest sparked the courage to launch this project. Anneliese shared how Greg Wyler had started his first company with no money but leveraged strong partnerships to succeed—a story that resonated deeply.

What began as a propulsion project quickly expanded to include Project RocNaV, focusing on custom flight computers for rocket navigation, inspired by Philemon’s involvement in the Fab Academy.

This evolution led to the creation of AHEAD Space—an entity dedicated to designing and building space hardware, primarily rocket systems, to position Rwanda as a leader in the space industry.
